What You Need for Your First Padel Match

Your first padel match is usually a mix of excitement, a little chaos and the question: "What should I actually bring?" The good news is that you don't need a full pro kit to play padel. To start, a few basics are enough to help you feel comfortable and more confident on court.

Padel is easy to get into, but the more you play, the more you'll notice the difference between random gear and gear that's genuinely made for this sport.

1. A padel racket

The most important item is a padel racket. Unlike a tennis racket, it has no strings, but a solid face with holes. That's why a padel racket feels completely different on impact.

If you're playing for the first time, you don't need the most expensive professional model straight away. What matters is that the racket is easy to handle, comfortable and forgiving.

For beginners, a round or teardrop racket with good control and a larger sweet spot is ideal. That means even if you don't hit the ball exactly in the centre, the racket will forgive you more.

2. The right shoes

Many players turn up to their first padel session in running shoes. You can get through your first game in them, but it's not the ideal solution.

Padel is full of quick changes of direction, short sprints, lateral movements and sudden braking. That's why it's important to have shoes that keep your foot stable and have an outsole suited to a padel surface.

If you plan to play regularly, padel shoes are one of the first things worth investing in. They improve your stability, comfort and confidence when moving.

3. Comfortable sportswear

You don't need anything complicated for your first match. Comfortable sportswear you can move freely in is enough.

Ideally, a t-shirt or tank top in a breathable fabric, plus sports shorts, a skirt or leggings — whatever you feel best in. You warm up quickly in padel, so avoid heavy, non-breathable fabrics.

Your clothing shouldn't restrict you when moving, lunging or hitting overhead shots.

4. Balls

Padel uses special padel balls. They look similar to tennis balls but have a different pressure and behave differently in play.

If you play at a club, the club or your playing partners often provide the balls. But if you want to be prepared, bring your own can of padel balls.

Balls wear out over time and lose pressure. If they're too soft or don't bounce enough, the game becomes slower and less precise.

5. A bag or backpack

An ordinary backpack may be enough for your first match, but if you start playing regularly, a padel bag makes a lot of sense.

It holds your racket, shoes, clothing, towel, water, balls and small items like overgrips or wristbands. The advantage of padel bags is that they're designed specifically for sports gear, so your racket travels more safely.

If you want something more practical for everyday use, a good backpack is also an excellent choice.

6. Water and a towel

This sounds obvious, but you'll appreciate it on court very quickly. Padel can be intense, especially once the game gets going and the rallies get longer.

Bring a bottle of water and a small towel. For longer sessions or in hot weather, they're essential. Dry hands and a good grip on the racket can make more of a difference than you'd think.

7. An overgrip and a wristband

If your hands sweat, you'll definitely appreciate a quality overgrip or wristband. Your grip on the racket has to be secure. When the racket slips in your hand, you lose control over your shot and the game is less enjoyable.

An overgrip is a small accessory, but if you play regularly it's one of the things you'll replace most often.

8. A good mood and a willingness to learn

You don't have to arrive at your first match as a finished player. The beauty of padel is that you can get into it fairly quickly. Your first rallies may not be perfect, but after a few games you'll start to understand bounces off the glass, movement around the court and basic tactics.

The most important thing is not to be afraid to play. Making mistakes is normal. Every player started exactly there.

Conclusion

For your first padel match you mainly need a racket, suitable shoes, comfortable clothing, balls and basic accessories such as water, a towel or a wristband.

You don't need the most expensive of everything. What matters is that your gear helps you feel comfortable and confident on court.
